James Colbert was born in Mill Valley California and studied at The Academy of Art. He has shown in New York, Buenos Aires, London, Germany and San Francisco.

I started doing pet portraits quite innocently for friends and family as gifts. I was mostly concentrating on my gallery work, trompe l'oeil and photography. The requests kept coming in and... There is something special and spiritual about capturing the essence of these wonderful creatures that give so much and ask so little in return. I enjoy this aspect of my artistic life immensely and try to keep my prices accessible for this reason. I have now been doing this since 1989 and the feedback and letters still arrive thanking me. Thank you all so much, but I couldn't do it without your wonderful pets. The pleasure is all mine!
